Auxiliary Honors Sarah Harvey

The Brodstone Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Spring Meeting was held Monday, April 7 at the Presbyterian Church in Superior.  There were 64 members in attendance.  The entertainment for the evening, introduced by Laurie Corman, Speech Team Coach, was Kara Peterson with her speech entitled “Small Towns”.  Guest speaker, Kori Field, Director of Nursing at the hospital, introduced herself and thanked the auxiliary members for their support.  The new Director of Surgery, Carie Meyer, was introduced and spoke of the additional surgery opportunities at Brodstone.

Karen Tinkham thanked the auxiliary members for the volunteer time and support.  The bedside tables, over the bed tables, and the chemistry analyzer for the lab that was purchased in 2007 are all greatly appreciated by the staff.  Karen reported on the successful Health Fair.

The honored volunteer for the meeting was Sarah Harvey.  She was honored for her dedication to all of the auxiliary events, especially the hours she has worked at the Nifty Thrifty and the Hospital Gift Shop.

Denise Thayer, Nifty Thrifty manager, reported on the support she has received  from volunteers with pricing and working the store.  Summer items have been marked and are ready to be displayed.  Hours on Thursdays were recently changed from 4 to 8 p.m. to 3 to 7 p.m. and this seems to be working better, so will become the permanent hours on Thursdays.  The Nifty Thrifty will also extend their hours on April 26.  The store will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to accommodate donors on garage sale day.  Items may be dropped off at the store until closing.  As they have been since they opened in 1991, the Nifty is a great asset to the community for their customers and for the donors.

Membership chairperson, Mary Fuller reported membership at over 230 members.  Virginia Lewis, Sewing Committee, reported 80 items were mended and 46 new items were made, such as walker caddies, surgical pillows and aprons.  Lorraine Rempe delivered 12 bibs for babies born at Brodstone in December and 16 in March.  Maxine Rempe reported for the hospital Gift Shop that business has been a little slow.  She wanted to make sure that everyone knew there are lots of items for sale at the Gift Shop, so please stop by to shop.  They could also use some volunteers to work some shifts in the gift shop.  Karen Fox reported the Fall Fund Raiser in November was a success with an income of $3,371.  The fall fund raiser in 2006 netted the auxiliary $2,919.  She also reported that July 6th is the date set for the Ice Cream Social that will be held at the Vestey Center from 2 to 5 p.m.

Officers for 2008-09 were elected as follows:  President-Marlene McGowan, Vice-President-Louise Henderson, Secretary-Karen Tinkham and Treasurer-Victoria Barnard.  Projects to be funded in 2008 for the hospital include a centrifuge for the laboratory, a defribulator for the Emergency Room, a pulse oximeter for the Cardio-Pulmonary Department and an exam table for the clinic.  The total amount donated by the auxiliary to the hospital for the equipment will be $21,000.

If you are interested in joining the auxiliary, Mary Fuller is our current membership chair, so just give her a call.  The Auxiliary also hosts other fundraising events throughout the year such as the Summer Ice Cream Social The Auxiliary has a Gift Shop in the Hospital.  Gift Shop hours are Monday thru Friday, 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m.  The Auxiliary also has a second hand store called the Nifty Thrifty located downtown Superior at 410 1/2 Central.  The hours of operation are Wednesday 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday 3 to 7 p.m., Friday 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.   Donations to the thrift store are always welcome.  The Gift Shop and Nifty Thrifty are always in need of more volunteers.  If you'd like to help please let us know!
