2009 Nuckolls County Health Fair a Success

The Nuckolls County Health & Wellness Fair held Saturday, April 25 at the Superior High School was a great success.  Over 200 community members attended the fair, even though it was cool, gloomy day.

Thirty-five exhibitors were on hand to share information about their services.  According to Karen Tinkham, one of the coordinators of the event, this was up about 10 exhibits from last year.

Blood draws were held in the week preceding the event.  This year a record 460 blood draws were done at Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, Nelson Family Medical Center in Nelson and Edgar Medical Clinic in Edgar.  This is an increase when in  2008, 351 Health Fair Profiles were done.  "This is great savings for the patient ," said Karen Tinkham, Public Relations Director.  "The normal charge is $218 and during the Health Fair this year, it was done for $35.  We are able to do this as a service to our patients with no insurance submissions and payment is due at the time of the services."

The tentative date for the 2010 Health Fair is Saturday, April 10, 2010.  Anyone interested in having a booth at the fair is urged to contact Karen Tinkham at Brodstone Memorial Hospital, 402-879-4432, ext #308.  There is a nominal booth fee to help with advertising costs.  The fair is sponsored by Brodstone Memorial Hospital, Superior FFA and Human Inter-agency Services of Nuckolls County.

Blood Pressures were taken at the Health Fair.

Brodstone's booth had nine "pit stops".

National Qigong Day was celebrated at the Health Fair with a 10 a.m. demonstration.

Hospital Holds Annual Meeting

The Brodstone Memorial Hospital Annual Board Meeting was held, Thursday, May 28. President Lane Hawley called the meeting to order, introduced the current board members and the medical staff.

John Keelan reported on the last fiscal year, ending April 30, 2009. Admissions were slightly down from last year, however Medicare admissions were slightly up. Patient days were down 236 days when compared to the previous year and swing bed days were down 366 days from last year. Surgery numbers were up compared to last year. All other ancillary areas had an increase except CT scans, mammography’s and EKGs.

Certification training of staff in Vasculature and Echo Ultrasound was completed. The hospital just purchased a new piece of equipment that will enable the addition of ankle brachial indices which is another component to vascular studies that are ordered frequently. Vascular studies are being performed with hospital equipment and staff allowing the services to be available daily. Echocardiograms will also be performed by Brodstone staff in the very near future. Digital Mammography has been in place for almost a year now. Once that first year has passed, the hospital will have a patient’s previous mammogram in digital form allowing the radiologist to compare the two without our need to mail the previous test, thus reducing our mail expense drastically. Several new lab tests were added over the past year. New equipment being utilized in the lab includes a blood bank gel system and new bed side glucose meters.

An election for two board members was held. Lane Hawley was re-elected and Bob Trapp elected for a three year term. Mike Thayer’s term on the board was exhausted after serving 12 years. Hawley presented Thayer with a plaque and thanked him for his dedicated service to the board. Other board members include Pat McCord, Marcia Buresh, Julie Simonsen and Beth Siebecker.

Information Technology reports they have upgraded the domain and print servers. The medical staff is now signing records electronically. Radiologists can now view and call-in dictation and sign records anywhere, even outside the state. Telehealth is now in place, allowing patients to confer with specialists while at Brodstone even though the consulting physician is located at another medical center. The emergency rooms will soon be set up so that tele-trauma can be used to alert the receiving hospital of an incoming trauma patient. Medical centers can then be preparing for the arrival of a patient and be better informed of the patient’s condition.

Three local bank presidents oversee our local endowment funds. Interest was down this year and $4,599 was received by the hospital. The PNC Advisor in New Jersey continues to manage the fund established by the Vestey Will. Earnings received by the hospital from this fund were $34,827 which was about $6,000 less than last year.

A report was given by newly elected president of the Hospital Auxiliary, Louise Henderson. She reported the auxiliary has a current membership of 230. Current activities include providing babysitting for pediatric patients, cross stitching bibs for newborns, sewing, mending and making several different new items for use in the surgical and O.B. departments at the hospital. The auxiliary also operates the hospital gift shop and Nifty Thrifty. The annual Lady Vestey Ice Cream Social will be held July 5 with co-chairs Kathe Ely, Karen Fox, Virginia Lewis and Sandy Bothwell. The Fall Fund Raiser will be chaired by Sarah Kirchhoff. During the auxiliary spring meeting held in March, the membership voted to contribute $18,000 to the hospital to fund a patient lift for the nursing department, a steamer for dietary, pulse oximeter for Cardiac Rehab and a stereo for the new MRI suite. Officers for 2009-2010 are Louise Henderson, President, Sherry Kniep, Vice-President, Karen Tinkham, Secretary and Victoria Barnard, Treasurer. Board President, Lane Hawley, thanked the auxiliary for their support of the hospital and for the funds to purchase needed equipment.

Lane Hawley announced the recipient of this year’s Health Care Career Grant, Kelly Ostdiek. Kelly recently graduated from Ft. Hays State University with a degree in Speech Pathology. She will be attending Creighton University at Omaha and majoring in Occupational Therapy.

What if Brodstone Memorial Hospital  earned a penny every time
YOU searched the internet?  Well, now they can!

Goodsearch.com is a fairly new search engine that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate.  You use it just as you would any search engine, and it’s powered by Yahoo!  Just go to www.goodsearch.com and download the toolbar.  It will appear at the top of your page each time you log on.  Be sure to enter Brodstone Memorial Hospital as the charity you want to support.  Share this information with your family and friends.  Just 500 BMH supporters searching four times a day will raise about $7300 in a year without anyone spending a dime!  So….spread the word!  If you have any questions, please contact Karen Tinkham at ktinkham@brodstonehospital.org.  And now you can also use this website to shop.  The web site will donate back to Brodstone based on the amount that you spend.  Just get shopping and designate Brodstone Memorial Hospital as your charity.  Thank you for considering this option.
