Seasonal Flu Vaccinations Available

Seasonal flu vaccinations are now available at Superior Family Medical Center. There is no shortage of this vaccine expected. One shot is needed per year, unless under the age of 9 years, then two are needed if it is the first time the patient has had a shot. The first seasonal flu shot clinic will be held Wednesday, September 16, 2 to 4 p.m. There is no need for an appointment for this clinic and there is a $25 charge for the shot. Additional seasonal flu shot clinics will be scheduled in the near future. Watch this paper for future ads.
H1N1 vaccinations are not expected until October, 2009. An announcement will be made when they are available. Priority groups will be utilized when distributing the vaccine.

Pam Bower, Infection Prevention Nurse advises, “Stay home if running a fever over 100 degrees, wash hands, cover your cough with your sleeve not your hand and sanitize, sanitize, sanitize!” This advice for controlling the spread of illness is just not for H1N1, it is for everything.

Dr. Daniel Brailita of Central NE Infectious Diseases and South Heartland District Health Department in conjunction with Brodstone Memorial Hospital, offers the following information:

What is H1N1 Influenza and how is it transmitted?
H1N1 influenza is a highly infectious illness caused by a virus. It usually affects the lungs and other areas of the respiratory tract. The virus is present in the respiratory secretions of the person at least 1 day before the illness occurs. Thus it spreads rapidly from person to person in the droplets that are expelled when the infected person coughs or sneezes. These viruses can be transmitted through hand contact with contaminated surfaces such as clothing, computer keyboards, or phones, and then touching your eyes or nose.

What are the signs and symptoms of H1N1?
The symptoms of novel H1N1 flu virus in people include fever over 100 degrees and cough or sore throat. Patients may also experience runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. So far H1N1 influenza is generally mild, similar to seasonal influenza and with comparable low mortality.
How long can an infected person spread this virus to others?
Usually 1 day before getting sick to 5 to 7 days after becoming ill.

What should I do if I have flu-like symptoms?
It is not necessary that all patients with flu-like symptoms be seen by a physician or be tested for influenza. Mild influenza-like illnesses do not need to be seen by a provider; they can stay at home in order to prevent further spreading. People with more severe symptom may need to be seen by a provider. A person with an influenza-like illness should stay home at least 24 hours after fever is gone (without use of fever-reducing medicine). This applies to school children also.

What should an exposed person do?
Persons exposed should practice “social distancing” (reducing contact with other people) until the incubation period (1-5 days) has passed. Exposed persons can still go to school or work but they need to be prepared to stay home if symptoms of disease become evident.

Influenza vaccine
For the past 50 years our main defense against influenza has been the seasonal influenza vaccine. However the seasonal vaccine will not protect against the H1N1. To protect against the seasonal and H1N1 influenza it will likely be necessary to receive 2 or 3 doses of vaccine this fall. Two doses of the H1N1 will most likely be needed. The vaccine for H1N1 is in safety testing at this time. It will not be available until at least October 2009.
The population targeted by the seasonal influenza A and B vaccine should plan to receive this vaccine as soon as it is available. The seasonal flu vaccine will not protect against H1N1, but it will protect against regular influenza and will possibly prevent further H1N1 changes.
