Austin & Michelle Represent Brodstone at California Exhibition

Austin Farnstrom, clinical pharmacist for Cardinal Health at Brodstone Memorial Hospital, presented a professional poster at the 53rd annual American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition in Anaheim, CA.  Austin was accompanied by third year pharmacy student Michelle Wessling from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy who was on rotation at Brodstone during the project.

The poster’s topic was on the evaluation of antibiotic prescribing for middle ear infections in children in a rural, outpatient setting. Bacteria resistance to available antibiotics is on the rise and is a growing public health concern.

Middle ear infections are experienced by many patients by the time they reach 4 years of age and constitute the most common reason for being prescribed an antibiotic. Appropriate drug selection, dosing, and duration reduces the chance for antibiotic misuse and the risk for the development of drug resistant bacteria. The results of the project were shared with pharmacists, residents, and students from across the globe.
